As Jewish constituents,  we thank you for joining Senator Sanders in sponsoring The Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to block an additional $20 billion weapons shipment to Israel! In addition to being against US and international law, sending more weapons and warplanes would fuel Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, and its expanding assault and bombardment of Lebanon. Thank you for joining your colleagues in taking action to stop US complicity in Israel’s egregious crimes against humanity and war crimes. 

We know that your sponsorship of the Joint Resolutions of Disapproval follows months of your advocacy on this issue. We are grateful that you visited the Rafah border last winter to assess the restrictions on aid entry, and we applaud your advocacy following that trip to demand that Israel stop blocking aid. While many of your colleagues have remained silent, you have been calling for an offensive weapons ban and for entry of all required humanitarian aid. Thank you! 

As Jews, we continue to say that Israeli policy with regard to Palestine is not in our name. We represent a growing segment of the Jewish community who opposes Israel’s long-standing illegal occupation, apartheid policies, and the actions over the past year in Gaza. In a September 2024 poll ,  87% of Jewish respondents favor a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Among the highest of Jewish values is Pikuach Nefesh, which is understood as,  Whoever destroys a single soul it is as though they have destroyed a complete world, and whoever preserves a single soul it is as though they have preserved an entire world. Israel’s ongoing massacres of Palestinians in Gaza are a total violation of that value. In the past year alone, Israel has murdered over 43,000 Palestinians, including at least 17,000 children, with the true death toll likely far higher. Now, expanding its relentless bombardment, it has killed more than 2,400 Lebanese people, carrying out massacres and mass forced displacement in Lebanon, and dragging the entire region into full-blown war.

It is with this sense of urgency that we are calling on you to go further. We urge Congress to enact an immediate arms embargo and to halt all military funding to the Israeli military. As Jewish Oregonians, we are proud of the leadership you have shown demanding a permanent ceasefire, entry of all needed humanitarian aid, and your support for the Joint Resolutions of Disapproval. We call on you to continue this hard work by publicly demanding an arms embargo to halt all weapons to the Israeli government immediately.
